Check It Out! Liz Stapleton, Chicago Electrologist in The Chicago Tribune

Check it Out!

I've had great success with my blog educating the public about the benefits of electrolysis for achieving permanent hair removal.  The exposure exploded (try repeating that 5 times) last week when the Chicago Tribune featured a full page article (and a gigantic photo of me) about my electrolysis business and the benefits of blogging.  You can read the full article at Chicago Tribune.  The article ran in the Business Section on June 2, 2008 and is titled "Blogs increase online traffic" by Ann Meyer, Special Reporter to the Tribune.  It's a great article!

Choosing an Electrologist

I've gotten many calls and emails since the Tribune article ran and a number of people from around the country inquired about what to look for in choosing an electrologist.  If you're outside the Chicagoland area, (call me if you're in the area) here are important factors to consider:

  • 34 states (including Illinois) regulate the practice of electrology and require electrologists to be licensed.  This is the single, most important credential to look for when choosing an electrologist and the license should be clearly posted in the office.  Never assume.  Ask to see the license.

  • The American Electrology Association(AEA) is the largest international not-for-profit organization representing the practice of electrology. Membership in AEA shows an electrologist's commitment to the highest standards in education, practice, and ethics.  To find an AEA member electrologist, go to their site and click on "Find an Electrologist" to search by state and city.

  • A Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE) is the voluntary, professional credential recognized by the American Electrology Association.  The credential indicates that the electrologist has voluntarily met an established norm (through testing) and is committed to regular courses of continuing education to maintain Board Certified status.  Ask the electrologist if she holds a CPE designation.

  • Most electrologists offer a complimentary consultation where you can meet the electrologist in person and ask questions.  This is a great opportunity to observe the office environment.  Is it clean and professional?  Ask about Infection Control Standards.  All electrologists should wear disposable gloves and use sterile single-use, disposable probes.  Non-disposable instruments like tweezers and probe tips should be individually packaged and sterile.

  • Lastly, ask questions about her experience and what you can expect in terms of meeting your expectations, how long it will take and any adverse reactions to expect.

An electrologist is considered a healthcare practitioner and has a legal and ethical duty to stay educated, informed and up-to-date on all aspects of the profession.  And since electrolysis requires a series of treatments to achieve permanency, it's important to find someone you feel comfortable with.
