Permanent Hair Removal Questions & Answers

How many electrolysis treatments are required?

The number of treatments necessary varies with each client. Treatment sessions can range from 15 minutes to more than an hour depending on the area being treated.

Factors such as hair growth cycles, the quantity and structure of hair presented, previous use of temporary hair removal methods, heredity, hormone function, certain medication and stress influence the treatment program for each individual. It is important to follow the recommended treatment plan to achieve optimum results.

What does electrolysis feel like?

With the advanced technology, equipment and treatment protocols, electrolysis is more comfortable and effective than ever before. Some areas (like the upper lip) can be more sensitive than others and there are over-the-counter topical anesthetic creams that can help minimize any discomfort.

Does electrolysis have any side effects on the skin?

Immediately following treatment, there may be a slight redness and/or swelling which usually disappears within a few hours. Occasionally, small whiteheads or tiny scabs may occur. It’s important to remember that any reaction is a part of the normal healing process in some people.

Can unwanted hair be removed from anywhere on the body with electrolysis?

Electrolysis works on all skin and hair types. It can be applied to most facial and body parts (except inner ear and nose) including: eyebrows, chin, upper and lower lip, jaw line and sides of the face, breast and underarms, abdomen, bikini line, legs and back. Based on a personal and confidential consultation, your electrologist designs a treatment plan that addresses your specific hair removal needs.

Can women begin or have electrolysis treatments during pregnancy?

Unwanted hair can be caused by hormonal changes brought on by pregnancy. Electrolysis can be safely performed on any normal skin including pregnant women. Although electrolysis has never been shown to be harmful to pregnant women, it’s always a good idea to seek the advice of your physician before beginning treatment.

Can hairs be removed from moles?

Electrolysis can be safely performed in most moles where states allow it. Your electrologist may require written approval from your physician.

Do electrologists follow appropriate Infection Control?

The American Electrology Association (of which I am an active member) as well as the Electrology Association of Illinois (where I’m licensed) has written Standards for Infection Control following the most recent recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Association for Practitioners in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). Standard Precautions includes hand washing, the use of gloves, sterilization of critical items used in electrology treatments, and the proper cleaning of environmental surfaces.

How do I choose an electrologist?

Regulation of electrology is on a state-by-state basis. States regulating the practice of electrology require a practitioner hold a valid license. This includes Illinois which is regulated by the Illinois Division of Financial and Profession Regulation. The electrology license should be clearly posted. Don’t hesitate to ask your electrologist to show it to you.

Also, membership in the American Electrology Association indicates the electrologist is keeping current with their field. Look for certificates with current dates as evidence of professionalism. The AEA has established specific standards for the profession including a national board certification credential, Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE). The voluntary designation indicates that the electrologist has successfully passed comprehensive national testing. Once awarded the CPE credential, the electrologist must fulfill continuing education requirements and/or be-re-tested in order to maintain the prestigious CPE status.

Many people find an electrologist through internet referral directories of national and state associations. The American Electrology Association is a good national source and the Electrology Association of Illinois is a source for Illinois. The Yellow Pages of local directories is also a good resource that offers valuable information regarding professional credentials. Sometimes, family and friends can make excellent recommendations. Most electrologists offer a complimentary consultation.
